The Real Reason You're Miscommunicating

April 23, 20262 min read

Communication is always the conversation in leadership. In teams. In relationships. In business.

But almost every teaching about communication starts in the wrong place, with the other person.

Here's the fundamental truth: your ability to communicate is only as good as your ability to hear yourself.

Most people are trying to communicate from a single page of a book, expecting the whole story to land. It can't. Because in any given moment, you have thoughts about a situation, feelings about it, and beliefs about it. And those three things are the lens through which you perceive everything. Everything your partner says. Everything your team communicates. Everything you think you're expressing.

When you don't know what you're thinking, feeling, and believing, you don't actually know what you're communicating. You're letting one of those three things speak for you, without even knowing which one.

That's not a communication problem. That's a self-awareness problem.

And self-awareness isn't analysis. It isn't judgment. It's simply the willingness to see. To write down your thoughts, your feelings, your beliefs about a situation, and witness them. Not fix them. Not explain them. Just become aware of them.

That awareness creates a zoom out. And in that space, wisdom has room to come through. Truth has room to come through. And suddenly, you hear the person in front of you differently. Not because they changed, because you did.

This is what intimacy actually is. Into me, I see. It starts there, with yourself, before it can exist with anyone else.

And this is the real game of leadership. Not hierarchy. Not control. Connection. Feeling your people beyond their words. Hearing what they're not saying. Making them feel seen and heard, because you actually can.

That's what makes people want to show up for you. Not because they have to. Because they want to.

New episode of The Power Edge is live. This one goes deep on communication, what it actually is, where it actually starts, and the practice that changes everything
